Course care, set up and an update

Published on 26th January 2019 in Uncategorized

All,

Firstly, congratulations on a noticeable improvement in pace of play – no doubt many are embracing their inner Bryson Dechambeau and leaving the stick in! It is also good to see members embracing the local rule aimed at course care and keeping carts away from the tees and greens to help reduce ground compaction, tyre marks and  transfer of disease (the turf variety)!

Ground staff have asked that we remind our members that the green sand buckets are not just a counter weight for your golf bag, and that if you have a full bucket to empty out at the end of the 18th, you have probably missed some course improvement opportunities. This has been particularly noted on tee boxes, where there are some fairly deep, fresh and very obvious excavations to be found between the gold and blue markers on competition days – please, if you take a divot – be considerate enough to fix it for the next member that is following you! Likewise, please, once you have admired your beautiful lofted wedge into the soft, receptive green – take a few seconds to fix your pitch mark (everyone now has the tools to do so).

On a much more serious note on the subject of tee boxes: –

Your match committee and general committee put a great deal of time and effort into preparing for YGC competitions, and in response to many pleas over the last year or so, have gone to great lengths to provide you with some variety in the course.

This involves;

  • relocating tee markers, forward or back, to provide a new perspective to the hole,
  • creating a “Movable Red” option for the ladies (after 13 years of playing the same tees every day!)
  • re positioning tee markers to one side of the tee or the other, to make members think about both the shot and shape of the hole,
  • narrowing of the tee markers to encourage you to think about the approach to the hole
  • (Note: this is NOT the Ground staff’s responsibility – your committee are taking these steps – so please don’t ‘have a crack’ the greens keepers)

No longer do you just walk up to the tee with the same club, tee up in the same position, and try to hit the same shot to the same spot that you have for 10+ years – there is some thought needed on how to play or construct the hole. We have also consulted both Ground staff and Course management in this undertaking, and we are working together to balance the tee wear, and allow the boxes to rejuvenate or be repaired.

Not everyone will always like where the tees have been placed, some may find it challenges their thought process, others may require a different club, or a different swing path – after-all golf is a game of individual challenges that challenge the individual – what might be great for a lefty, isn’t so flash for a righty – if you’ve got a natural draw or ‘power fade’ you may need to create a different shot – otherwise we’d all just go ten pin bowling with the gutter bumpers down so we could never miss!

Your committee spend a great deal of their own time walking around the Course to set it up for the next day’s play. The tee locations are set by the Committee – not the ground staff and certainly not by anyone else.

Over the last few weeks (at least) it has been noted that someone – and it is not the Ground staff, Course Staff or YGC Committee – has taken it upon themselves to change the course set up – to change the location of the tee markers, either before or perhaps even during the Competition.

This is completely unacceptable and is tantamount to cheating.

No member, other than the Committee, has the authority to re position any tee blocks – at any time, and any person found to be tampering with the course set up without the expressed authority of the Committee, will face severe sanctions.

Please note the Code of Conduct has been updated as the result of some recent changes.
