VGA Pennant report – Round 2 v Club Mandalay – 28 Feb

Published on 25th February 2021 in Uncategorized

Starting our 2021 campaign in Round 2 after a first round bye (Goonawarra withdrew their team this season leaving a gap in the field) the team headed out to Yering Meadows to take on Club Mandalay.

In sunny conditions, although a bit breezy; Calvin stepped up to No1 and played great golf to finish up 4 & 3 (against ‘the other’ Gillard).

Brock and Aaron had the ball on a string (a very long one from all accounts) and both finished their opponents on the 11th hole, winning 8 & 7 – thanks to Club Captain Joe Caruana for stepping in at the last minute the carry Brock’s bag.

Team Captain Darren Kershaw was his usual flawless self – winning 5&4; unfortunately Jas went down 4 & 2, Alex was stiff going down by 1 on the last, and Pete had an off day losing 5 & 4 – importantly we secured the 1st team win 4 to 3.

Thank you to this week’s non-playing team member Dan Saykan who was on hand to support the lads and fill in as team manager, and to the YGC members who gave up their time to caddy, including Para, Ronnie D, Crawf, and ‘The Mullin’, as well as those members who turned out to walk with and support our guys.

After one round we are sitting 4th, only one match behind this week’s opponents Werribee Park. If we can come away with a good win against Werribee at Mandalay we could easily jump into the top 2.

Saturday’s forecast is for a balmy 28 degrees, with the possibility of light showers – it would be great to see a few members venture across the Hume to encourage our lads and cheer them home.

If you want to watch some high quality golf, and support the team, head over to Mandalay for the 12PM tee off this Sunday and fly the flag – maybe have a brew or lunch while you’re there.

If you see the boys round the course or range this week, wish them well and let them know we are all behind them.

Go Bats! 🦇
