Midweek Championship – the result

Published on 26th May 2021 in Uncategorized

Entering the final round of the Midweek Championship there were any number of contenders vying for the trophy.

The weather was predicted to take a step closer to winter, and in the face of a potential COVID outbreak, a large number of the field decided to stay home to have a iced vo-vo and a hot chocolate by the warmth of the fireplace. Those YGC stalwarts that did venture out, were met by a chilly, but generally dry and breezy day, with only a couple of very brief showers to break the sunshine.

At the top of the leader board at +3 sat Jack Leonello, ahead of Shayne Cairns on a countback – it looked like being a tussle between the tigers 🐅 for the honours. A bunch of challengers sat in the wings, with Princely and Stuart one back at +4, Codin loitering at +5 and Frank Sudborough was also just off the pace with plenty of shots up his sleeve.

  • Would Jack be able to hold on, or would he come up short?
  • Would Shayne crumble as he had done so frequently in the recent (and still very raw past) or could he hold his nerve and “do a Phil!” and win one for the old(er) guys?
  • Could Princely, sitting one back in equal 3rd at +4, control his power game in the breezy conditions?
  • Could the Prez,  tied for 3rd at +4, do a Bradbury and slide in under the radar and steal the chocolates?
  • Could Codin recapture his first round form after crashing in the 2nd round?
  • Would some unforeseen raider charge home to take the win?

As it unfolded Princely took advantage of the benign early conditions to post the club house lead at +9, adding a +5 round to his previous rounds efforts of (+5 and -1) as the wind picked up and clouds threatened – it could be a tough ask to overcome;

The Prez was only a couple back as he made the turn for home – but couldn’t get a putt to drop and then found water on 15, 16 and 18 to quickly fall out of contention, fading to finish +11.

Codin posted a +6 front nine and left too much to do coming home, he brought it back strongly with a -2 back 9, but the damage was done, finishing at +9 for the event.

Wally Wescott came home with a wet sail, carding an impressive 77 off the stick today, to finish 3rd overall at +8, but it looked like no one would catch the old stager out front.

Jack had it going early in the round but a double on the par 3 5th and bogeys on 8 & 9 saw him turn at +4 for the day, 4 shots back – and whilst he finished square over the back 9, it wasn’t going to be enough to haul in the front runner.

Shayne managed to keep his composure (as one of his group imploded – no names Witho), squaring the card today and finishing  strongly over the closing 5 holes (-2) to post a +3, 3 round total.

Congratulations Shayne Cairns – our 2021 YGC Midweek Champion 🏆     👏👏👏
