Senior’s Pennant Report – Round 1 2022
Published on 9th February 2022 in Uncategorized
Senior’s pennant kicked off this week with our teams travelling to Heidelberg for Round 1.
Our champion Reds (Capt. Jenny Bernhardt ) are hoping to back it up this year, and the Blacks (Capt. Joe Caruana) will be looking to add their name to the winners Trophy.
Such was the desire to get on board that winning band wagon, we entered a 3rd team the Blue, under the leadership of new VC Mike Lester- let’s see how the new team come up!
Yarrambat Reds
It was an anxious start with a couple of players not being able to play, Mikey Waters and Paul C. We had some last-minute changes with John Polemikos and Mike Lester filling in for the players unavailable. A big thank you to both. Sam Saykan and Mark B started us off and Sammy, being his most consistent self, got the better of his opponent 5&3 (whispers are that the toyed with him because he didn’t want to finish too early), while Mark went down 2&1.
Michael Hou and Sammy P came up with a win and a loss respectively, Michael won 3&2 and Sammy 1 down. John P and Rod Heideman came in with a great result both winning their games in convincing fashion.
The game of the day goes to Jacqui who wiped the floor with her opponent 8&7 whilst also giving him 6 shots, not much more to say but that was great (WOW!!).
Mike put in a valiant effort giving a huge number of shots away and eventually went down 2&1. A great start to our season winning 5 matches.
Great effort everyone, I’ll be back to take the reins for the next match at Yarrambat.
Go you mighty Reds.
Captain Jenny B
Yarrambat Black
The 2022 senior’s pennant season got underway today at Heidelberg GC with the Yarrambat Blacks playing Rosanna Whites.
With picture perfect weather conditions, the course in great shape, the greens were very slick and challenging, the team gave it their all.
Scores fluctuated as the heat and pressure was rising with steady Gilbert, Shayne and Des cleaning up early while Mick Di followed suit to join them and celebrate their wins with the lunch pack provided.
Debutants Catherine and Bill Hassett fought strongly in their matches with Catherine finishing ahead at the last while Bill just fell short. Well fought out.
The Captain and Rob O`Connell also fought tooth and nail to the death only to end up one short.
Great to see lots of happy and content golfers with a hunger to compete and genuine friendships shared.
Captain Joe Caruana.
Yarrambat Blue
Yarrambat Blue had a tough day at the office in the first senior’s pennant round where we drew the local team, and 3-time winners, Heidelberg Green. While Neil McGlinchey was the only one to win his match on the day, all the other 7 matches were close events and only decided in the last few holes.
Match play away from home is such a different beast to stroke. You can be playing well and still lose as your opponent can get the ‘rub of the green’ at crucial stages, not to mention trying to adjust to the pace and bounce of a different course and greens.
Notwithstanding the scoreboard the team had a very enjoyable day in beautiful conditions and great camaraderie. We are looking to turn the results around in the next round at our home course
One other noteworthy highlight from the day was the lunch pack served to the players. A gourmet sandwich, a huge slab of carrot cake and a mars bar.
Ian certainly typified the rollercoaster of emotions on the day when he thought he had lost his Mar’s bar and then found it again!
