President’s Cup Winner

On a near perfect day, with the sun shining and the lush green fairways beckoning – Rob Paravizzini faced off against Joseph Nguyen.

Rob was in a rare vein of form, and coming off a solid win in the previous Tuesday Night’s Chicken Run, was ready. Giving away a mammoth 19 strokes, Rob faced the mountainous challenge with a ne’er before seen stoicism, exuding a zen-like attitude which no doubt unsettled his already nervous opponent.

Joseph, who would normally hit 300 balls at Yarra Bend, have a solid breakfast and then come to play was somewhat out of sorts and didn’t follow his usual routine – having been spooked by a traffic jam the week before and almost missing his tee time. The nerves of playing in such a prestigious even final were playing on his mind, and his usually unflappable 3 wood deserted him early.

The match see-sawed early with Rob taking the lead through consistent tee to green golf, whilst Joseph was scrambling to regain his composure. The match seemed headed in Rob’s favour as he took a 4 hole lead, but as they turned to the back 9, Joseph found his groove and started to peg back the deficit.

Winning 10, 12.13 and 15 Joseph was only 1 down approaching the 16th. Things were tight, and Joseph had an opportunity to square the match, but a putt left short saw Rob dormie 2 up.

Squaring the 17th was all that was needed for Rob to take home the silverware 2&1, an outstanding effort and just reward for 5 rounds of solid match play.

Commiserations to Joseph, who played well above his handicap and held his nerve almost to the end – a great achievement to make the final.

Congratulations Rob Paravizzini – 2022 President’s Cup winner!
