VGA Pennant R3

This week saw the lads head out to Mt Derrimut to take on the much fancied Gisborne GC – who came down from Division 4 at the end of last season.

The weather was cool and the wind a little inconsistent, while the course is a challenging layout with plenty of water, elevation changes, blind tee shots and dodgy bunkers. It was fantastic to see the level of support the squad had from the YGC ‘rank and file’ – nearly every player had a YGC caddy on their bag, and a number of others turned out to cheer the team on. This support can often be the difference, as it is a long lonely walk if you are behind and fighting to win.

Many thanks to Skipper Joe, the ‘capper Wilso, Crawf, Sammy Saykan, Paul ‘Sarge’ Murtagh, The Wally, Mick Wilson (a true pennant stalwart!), Mr Muftarov Senior, and Para who all made the journey west. Jack was unable to be there as he had a personal emergency but was on the tweet regularly looking for updates and showing true support when he had bigger issues to address.

Our thoughts were also with our previous legendary team manager Jason “The” Mullin, who was also dealing with his own private issues. His unerring support over the years is a big reason we are here today. (We’re all with you Jase.)

Brock’s late withdrawal saw Alex “The Lion” Rachkovski step up to take the No 1 position and he fought a great, but unlucky, battle knowing that every hole counts. Darren and Daniel both had great wins, while Matty and Aaron had chances but were eventually outplayed. Jas got the perfect number from his caddy of the 18th to close out a great round with a clutch 1 up win, while Imran played a lumberjack of a bloke who was driving it over 300m. Immy finished 1 up on the last after a brilliant up and down from 110m out of the fairway bunker – after his opponent nearly drove the green.

A huge team effort, under immense pressure and stressful circumstances. very proud of the team this week! We are sitting 3rd on the ladder after 3 rounds behind the powerhouse teams of Box Hill and The Heritage. Well done lads.

This week it is out to Churchill-Waverley to take on old foes Goonawarra – I hope to see you there.
