Senior Pennant Final Round

Well if you thought last week’s round was a day to remember then this week’s round makes it pale into insignificance.

We needed all hands on deck today to combat against one of the home sides, Whittlesea Gold. It started off badly with the Captain (yours truly) going down with the ship even before it sailed. Truth is I woke up with a chronic back issue and struggled to get out of bed let alone swing a golf club. So what should have been a glorious day ended up in disaster with the team having to go into battle one down without firing a shot. In situations like this one of the team members who were not picked to play could have been recalled but I had graciously offered all of our substitutes to our Black and Red Teams who were in need of players so we were left high and dry.

Anyway, amongst all of the negativity it was still a beautiful day for golf played on what I believe was a much improved but still very challenging Whittlesea Golf Course. Fierce determination by the Blues to do their best was unfortunately to no avail. The Plate was actually won by the Whittlesea Gold Team, our direct opponent. I believe our substitute players (Vas, Russell and Witho) also battled hard and I thank them for putting themselves out there to support their fellow club members.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank David Morley for taking on the Captain’s duties in my absence. Much appreciated mate!

In closing, a big shout out to Patrick Danaher from Box Hill, Gavin Pearce, Peter Lowrey and of course the whole Yarrambat Golf Club Committee for supporting the event and it’s Senior members so well over the past 5 weeks. It was much appreciated by all participants and we can only hope the same effort and support can be provided in the future.

To my team, it was a pleasure leading you guys into battle. You all approached each round with the kind of professionalism, comradery and determination required to compete at this level and I’m sure we will succeed in the future!

Go Blues!

Yarrambat Black

A somewhat abridged edition of the Yarrambat Blacks report today as the entire stable will be heading for a well earned spell. Our runners ventured to Royal Whittlesea and were confronted with a rather heavy track thanks to about 20mm of overnight rain, the rail was in the true position but the greens had copped a battering with surface water on all 18 that persisted throughout the entire program!

The day’s proceedings was a team aggregate stableford event with all the Yarrambat teams fairing reasonably well, unfortunately the Blacks brought up the rear, only three of our runners breaking 30 points, Rod the Pumpa on 30, Young Tommy as solid as ever 31 and another late ring in, in Ian “Hit me with your Witham stick” a cracking 37 points! If we go back through his form he does seem to excel at this track!

It has been a slightly disappointing prep for the Blacks but nonetheless, a real blast to train this fine group of tuned and ripped athletes, so let’s look forward to a stronger 2024 and another year under our belts, bloody hell, and if there are any owners out there wanting a great trainer – call Chris Waller!

Cheers Wilso.

A word from the organiser

To the Committee,

I am sure I speak on behalf of all of our members who were involved in this year’s Senior Pennant, in conveying our gratitude to the club for the support you have given us, both financially and in the coverage on our club website.

The seniors who play pennant consider it a privilege to be able to represent our club.

The Blues came within a half-point of reaching the  semi-finals. With the influx of younger(?) players such as Nic T, we can only go from strength to strength.

If there was any doubt as to the competitiveness of this competition, then the finals yesterday give us an indication – the result went down to the final pairing on the final hole, and still they were all tied. It was therefore decided on individual points difference, a great end to a very good season.

With your support I can see the Bats, in the not too distant future, once again winning the pennant.

Best regards,

Gavin Pearce
