Senior Pennant kicks off in style

Yarrambat GOLD

The day started with a fairly stiff north-westerly blowing across a Whittlesea Golf Course that was really in quite good nick given the ridiculously hot weather over the past month or so. Fair to say it was in a lot better condition than we anticipated so there were no excuses for not playing well .

And boy did we play well! Playing against one of the better sides in the Rosanna Greens we came home with a wet sail and won overall easily 6.5 points to 2.5! That really is a fantastic start to the Senior Pennant Season and should give everyone in the side the confidence that we can make a difference this year.

  • Starting with Mark B who, giving away a shot on 2 holes was able to jump out of the blocks and was never headed in his 3/2 victory. i was privy to watching him play and I now understand why he is a low handicapper. He hits the ball so straight and his short game was just brilliant, and there’s room for improvement with him missing some 3 footers. We can blame the mossy greens for those little blemishes to an otherwise fantastic round.
  • So welcome to the club Michael McGrath who used his local knowledge of the course to his benefit finally downing stiff competition on the last hole. Well done, Michael!
  • And the “flying skateboard” Mark H battled brilliantly to catch his opponent on the very last hole and square the ledger.
  • Rodney M continues to amaze me with his never say die attitude finishing off the Rosanna Greens Captain  in fine style.
  • Another newcomer to the team Peter D wins the title of the biggest winner this week with an impressive 6/4 victory. I’m not overly surprised given when I played with him last week, he showed me enough to feel he is a much better player than his handicap indicates.
  • The old stalwart Gavin P came out and silenced the critics with a thumping 4/3 victory. I’ll just rename him now as the “Quiet Achiever” because I feel he has it in him to really shine this year.
  • Yours truly also had a day out with the sticks beating his opponent 5/4. But I guess that’s what golf is all about, beautiful one day and quite possibly not so beautiful the next. I’ll take the highs today and worry about tomorrow some other time!

Last but not least, thanks to Russell L for stepping in at short notice. He didn’t get the chocolates this time but battled hard, nonetheless.  And Jenny B, thanks you for assisting me today distributing the new golf tops and caps which we all agreed were super good.

In summary it was a great day regardless of the result with great spirit and sportsmanship displayed by all players. The course itself was well presented and a pleasure to play on. Well done Whittlesea GC.

On another note, I just want to congratulate the Yarrambat Blacks for winning their round 7 points to 2 against last year’s winners, the Heidelberg Blues! Well done guys!

Can’t wait till next Monday at Box Hill Golf Club!

Go Bats!

Mike Di Vincenzo

YARRAMBLAQ

Here is the first report for YARRAMBLAQ STABLES, 2025.

The Yarramblaq Stables started their crusade on a hot and blustery morning at Royal Whittlesea. The recent hot and dry weather not taking as severe a toll as one may have expected, the running surface very dry and superfast, the greens surprisingly slow due to plenty of irrigation and some sort of duck weedy cover.

The Blaqs got off to a flying start in the 9-race program, accomplishing a solid 7 and 2 victory over last year’s champions, Heidelberg Blue. So good to beat the team that just knocked us over in the 2024 final at Gardiners Run!

Form reports on our runners for the day…………

THE MOTSWANIAN PRINCE …… The “PRINCE” was badly weighted and giving up 3 shots, was solid all day and although he obviously needed the jump out, hung tough, finished strong on the line to grab the victory! …… A nicely timed 1 UP win.

YOUR’E A WIMP WILSON …… Weights again, conceding 3 and up against his old rival ,the “WIMP” absolutely flew the gates and stormed to an early 4 up lead after 5 holes and although he was never headed did tire late in the heat to still score quite comfortably! …… A solid 3 and 2 victory.

SMUDGE O’CONNELL …… The “SMUDGE” losing a couple of strokes and coming into the field as the late emergency was neck and neck most of the early part but a good turn of foot and 3 straight pluses a furlong out, put paid to his opposition! …… A typically wily 1 UP win.

THE CARPENTER …… The retired tradie knuckled badly at the start and may have lost his irons, but after being tailed off and 4 down after 5, in true no nonsense tradie tradition rattled off a blistering 11 straight pars to pummel his flabbergasted opposition! …… A huge 3 and 2 triumph.

HIT ME WITH YOUR WITHAM STICK …… The “STICK” also bumbled the start being a few lengths behind on settling, slowly rounding up the pack it was a ding dong battle all the way to the finishing post, a dead heat being the final decision! …… A hard fought ALL SQUARE.

THE HUSHED NINJA …… It wasn’t the best of days for the “NINJA’, after missing the kick and having zero luck in the run, battling hard the last couple of furlongs only to watch his opposition cruise to an easy win, a tough race but he will fight another day! …… A disappointing 4 and 2 loss.

ROCKABILLY REBEL …… The “REBEL” another to carry top weight with a 4 shot deficit was left lamenting early, racing on his non favoured track conditions the old stager using all his guile in the now sweltering heat, pounded down the outside for a gutsy draw! …… A gruelling ALL SQUARE result.

DAICOS’DADDY …… “DADDY” was the standout runner for the day, giving up 3 shots he bolted right from the start and was never headed, lengthening his lead at all stages of the race, railing like a greyhound, striding on the rails, easing on the line, what a great win! …… A magnificent 5 and 4 trouncing.

GREGGERS LEGACY …… The stable newbie and very first starter in the last and running solo, “GREGGERS” was as impressive as the ‘DADDY’ New to the format a giving up 7 bloody strokes, jumped to an early 4 length lead, held his nerve and cruised to an effortless victory! …… A brilliant 4 and 3 smashing.

All in all a very professional and super satisfying start to the season, well done BLAQS, may we keep hurrying home!

Next round is at the tight turning “Royal Boc Hill” always a good test of accuracy, we will be up against Rosanna Red who are coming off an 8 and 1 victory  so we will need to be right on our toes for that one!

As usual, I will be sending out details later in the week so keep your peepers peeled!

Cheers and go BLAQS…

Wilso.

A big shout out to our fellow stables, Yarrambat Golds who also had a very good win 6.5 to 2.5, well done Micky D and the team, keep up the good work for the little old Yarrambat club!
