VGA Pennant R1
Published on 23rd February 2025 in UncategorizedRound 1 kicked off at Eastern Golf Club on Sunday against Chirnside Park (Gardiner’s Run) who had come down from Division 4. We went in with a couple of young ‘fresh’ faces and some older ‘experienced’ heads, on a day that had all of the weather conditions and a constant 40 km/h wind! The lead was constantly changing over the challenging back 9, and I don’t think the ground staff predicted the extreme wind when placing some of the holes a few feet away form dramatic drop offs and swales. More than 5 balls were putted from close range only to watch them roll off the green and finish 20 metres from the pin.
Jordan and Ben both made their debut for the club and with the help of the two Daves as caddies they pushed their matches to the 18th. Jordy had a chance to finish it on 17, but with an eagle putt to gimme range he took the win on the 9th (our 18th) to get the ball rolling.
Ben, with his dad on the bag, had his nose in front all day, but over the last 3 holes it just didn’t roll Ben’s way for the last couple of holes, and when his opponent made a great up and down form the short side bunker, Ben lipped out the birdie to go down on the last.
Darren (and Sarge) found himself in a couple of tricky situations early on, including his ball coming to rest on top of another ball on the first hole, but fought it out over the 18 holes, coming from 2 down to tie the match on the 18th.
Aaron (and Pete) was off next and had a tight match on his hands. For the majority of the match the lead was changing hands until the ball didn’t do what we wanted it to in the last few holes, losing on the 17th.
Jasleen (and Stuart) had a tough day at the office against an opponent who was doing Jasleen things to Jas, popping them in from everywhere. There wasn’t much that went our way and unfortunately it was all over on the 15th.
Daniel (and Durim) had a challenging day as well, with the lead changing hands multiple times on the front 9, the advantage went to the opposition on the back nine and we went down on the 16th.
Peter Lamaris was back (straight from his morning clinics) but was caddy-less due to a late withdrawal, until a young fella named Joe Caruana, who was standing on the 1st looking for a job to do, stepped into the breach. Seemed to be a match made in heaven with Pete winning the first 7 holes. Then Joe had to take off and his opponent kicked into gear on the back nine with four birdies in a row, but the damage weas done early and Peter sealed the deal on the 15th! (He is trying to find a pocket in his bag to put Joe in)
We went down 2.5 – 4.5 but for a few inches it could have been the other way round. It was great to see a few members come along and support, including pennant stalwart and renowned wanderer of the moors, Micky Wilson.
We will be back with a vengeance next week to take on Patterson River at Gardiner’s Run at 12:10 off the 10th tee and your support will be appreciated.
